One of my favorite books is by Deb Shapiro Your Body Speaks Your Mind. As a Functional Medicine RN we focus on treating the whole person looking at mind, body and spirit as we are all energy and it is all connected. Stress and emotions are related to many health issues. Finding the emotional messages are so very important to the underlying cause of illness.
The American Medical Association (AMA) states 80 percent of all health problems are stress related, and even the conservative Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that 85 percent of all diseases appear to have an emotional element.
The classic definition of stress is “any real or imagined threat, and your body’s response to it.” Research has shown that your body’s natural stress response can have a significant impact on everything from immune function and brain chemistry, to blood sugar levels, hormonal balance, and much more.
When you feel an emotion, it is really a vibration of a particular energy. Each emotion has its own vibratory signature, when intense emotions arise, they can become trapped in your body like a ball of energy. This energy can become trapped in your body anywhere and can disrupt the body’s energy system.
Your body is biochemical and biophysical and any disruptions in your energy field will eventually result in physical dysfunction. Your body cannot tell the difference between an actual experience that triggers an emotional response and an emotion that is fabricated through a thought process alone such as worry.
Thoughts can activate your body’s stress response which will produce chemicals that can make you sick. You can literally manifest disease, or healing just by thinking.
There is a technique referred to as “EFT” or “Emotional Freedom Technique” and clinical trials have confirmed that EFT is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. Once the distress is reduced or removed, your body can often rebalance itself and heal on its own.
Studies demonstrating EFT’s effectiveness include the following:
- A critical review published in the American Psychological Association’s (APA) journal Review of General Psychology found that EFT “consistently demonstrated strong effect sizes and other positive statistical results that far exceed chance after relatively few treatment sessions.”
- A 2009 study of 16 institutionalized adolescent boys with histories of physical or psychological abuse showed substantially decreased intensity of traumatic memories after just ONE session of EFT.
- An EFT study involving 30 moderately to severely depressed college students found that depressed students given four 90-minute EFT sessions showed significantly less depression than the control group when evaluated three weeks later.
- A 2013 study published in the Energy Psychology Journal confirmed that the benefits from EFT are the result of the tapping process and not a placebo effect.
EFT, sometimes simply referred to as “tapping,” is a simple process that involves tapping your fingertips on various parts of your head, chest, and hands while thinking about your specific problem and guided meditation (voicing positive affirmations). This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmations works to clear the “short-circuit”—the emotional block—from your body’s bioenergy system, thus restoring your mind and body’s balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease.
