The Institute of Medicine is finally acknowledging the toxic effects of mammogram radiation as a significant factor in development of breast cancer; just one mammogram can expose you to the radiation of 1,000 chest x-rays Mammograms also carry an unacceptably high rate of false positives up to six percent which can lead to repeat screenings that expose you to even more radiation as well as unnecessary medical procedures, including biopsies, surgery and chemotherapy
A new study published in the British Medical Journal (December 2011) confirmed that breast cancer screening may cause women harm, especially during the early years after they start screening. This harm is largely due to surgeries, such as lumpectomies and mastectomies, and other (often unnecessary) interventions. The study highlights losses in quality of life from false positive results and unnecessary treatment.
Fortunately, we’re beginning to see the initial stirrings of change, as this latest report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) shows, the role of environmental exposure may be playing in the development of breast cancer. The IOM committee is calling for more research into the risks of various environmental exposures over the course of a woman’s lifetime. Isn’t it ironic that the mammogram—the principle diagnostic test given to women to help detect and prevent breast cancer—is responsible for increasing women’s risk for developing it?

What Is Thermography?
Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, or Thermography is a non-invasive test of physiology (the science that deals with the functioning of the organism and its parts). It is a valuable procedure for alerting your doctor to changes that can indicate early stage breast disease and in the evaluation of unexplained pain. It is also helpful in monitoring therapy progress for multiple conditions and injuries such as back injuries, arthritis, headache, nerve damage, fibromyalgia, reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), dental problems and TMJ, artery inflammation, vascular disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc disease, inflammatory pain conditions, skin cancer, sprains/strains, stroke screening, whiplash and also digestive disorders.
In 1965, Gershon-Cohen, a radiologist and researcher from the Albert Einstein Medical Center, introduced infrared imaging to the United States. Since the late 1970′s numerous medical centers and independent clinics have used this procedure in hundreds of thousands of patients. In 1982 the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved breast thermography as an adjunctive diagnostic breast cancer screening procedure. Thermography is not only used in medical applications, but also in industry, veterinary medicine, and dentistry.
Thermography is supported by more that 800 peer reviewed studies encompassing more than 300,000 participants. Infrared Thermography is evidenced based medicine. And unlike Mammography there is
No ionizing radiation exposure
No contact – no breast compression
Non-invasive – no dyes or contrast mediums
Thermography is 86 to 96 percent accurate for early screening of cancer with no radiation exposure. This is safe, non-toxic and highly accurate and inexpensive form of diagnosis for of diagnostic imaging used by progressive physicians in the US and Europe since 1962 it is based on heat emissions naturally occurring in the body.
How Does Thermography Work?
A trained clinical thermographer uses a very sensitive medical digital camera to take thermal images of the body and sends this data to a computer. All living organisms, including humans, radiate heat energy in specific patterns. These images are then interpreted by a qualified physician. In this way, skin temperatures, thermal and vascular patterns, and sympathetic nervous system responses can distinguish between normal and abnormal physiological function of the body.
As the body’s cells go through their energy conversion process they emit heat. When there is an uncontrolled growth, as in a cancer or early increase in blood vessels in a cancerous area, even more heat is emitted. Thermography is able to register these heat emissions and display them in detail on a computer
How Does Thermography Detect Breast Problems?
The underlying principle by which infrared imaging detects pre-cancerous and cancerous growths is because tumors have an increase in blood vessels in order to maintain the increased metabolism of cellular growth and multiplication. With this increased blood-flow comes an increased temperature, even in very small tumors. Abnormalities are often picked-up before a tumor is formed or is seen on mammography.
A woman’s thermal image is like a thumbprint and should not change over time. Serial studies are compared with previous studies for changes. If a woman has never had a breast thermogram before, an initial thermogram is performed and then a repeat study is done three months later to establish an accurate baseline. After this, annual thermography can be performed and compared with previous studies. A breast thermogram takes about 20 minutes to do and does not touch or compress the breast, nor is there radiation exposure.
Cancer Prevention Begins with Your Lifestyle Choices
Mammograms are portrayed as the best form of “prevention” a woman can get. But early diagnosis is not the same as prevention. And cancer screening that does more harm than good can hardly qualify as “your best bet” against becoming a cancer statistic! I believe the vast majority of all cancers could be prevented by strictly applying basic, common-sense healthy lifestyle strategies, such as the ones below.
Avoid sugar, especially fructose, high fructose corn syrup and processed foods.
Optimize your vitamin D levels and know what your vitamin D number is. Vitamin D serum range is 30 to 80 you want to aim for 70 – Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of nature’s most potent cancer fighters. Vitamin D is actually able to enter cancer cells and trigger apoptosis (cell death). If you have cancer, your vitamin D level should probably be between 70 and 100 ng/ml. Vitamin D works synergistically with every cancer treatment I’m aware of, with no adverse effects. Ideally, your levels should reach this point by exposure to the sun or a safe tanning bed, not oral vitamin D.
Limit your protein. For most people, aim for between 40 and 70 grams of protein a day, which is typically about 2/3 to half of what they are currently eating.
Avoid unfermented soy products. Unfermented Soy is high in plant estrogens, or phytoestrogens, also known as isoflavones. In some studies, soy appears to work in concert with human estrogen to increase breast cell proliferation, which increases the chances for mutations and cancerous cells.
Improve your insulin and Leptin receptor sensitivity. The best way to do this is by avoiding sugar and grains and restricting carbs to mostly fiber vegetables. Also make sure you are exercising.
Exercise regularly. One of the primary reasons exercise works to lower your cancer risk is because it drives your insulin levels down, and controlling your insulin levels is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cancer risks.
Maintain a healthy body weight. This will come naturally when you begin eating right for your nutritional type and exercising. It’s important to lose excess body fat because fat produces estrogen.
Make an organic green vegetable juice daily and drink about 16 ounces a day.
Get plenty of high-quality, Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 deficiency is a common underlying factor for cancer.
Curcumin. This is the active ingredient in turmeric and in high concentrations can be very useful adjunct in the treatment of cancer. It actually has the most evidence-based literature supporting its use against cancer of any nutrient, including vitamin D.
Avoid drinking alcohol, or at least limit your alcoholic drinks to one per day.
Avoid electromagnetic fields as much as possible, do not have a smart meter installed on your home. Even electric blankets can increase your cancer risk
Avoid synthetic hormone replacement therapy, especially if you have risk factors for breast cancer. Breast cancer is an estrogen-related cancer, and according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer rates for women dropped in tandem with decreased use of Hormone Replacement Therapy. (There are similar risks for younger women who use oral contraceptives. Birth control pills, which are also comprised of synthetic hormones, have been linked to cervical and breast cancers.)
If you are experiencing excessive menopausal symptoms, you may want to consider bioidentical hormone replacement therapy instead, which uses hormones that are molecularly identical to the ones your body produces and do not wreak havoc on your system. This is a much safer alternative.
Avoid BPA, phthalates, and other xenoestrogens. These are estrogen-like compounds that have been linked to increased breast cancer risk.
Make sure you’re not iodine deficient, as there’s compelling evidence linking Iodine deficiency with certain forms of cancer. Dr. David Brownstein, author of the book Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It, is a proponent of iodine for breast cancer. It actually has potent anticancer properties and has been shown to cause cell death in breast and thyroid cancer cells. For more information, I recommend reading Dr. Brownstein’s book.
Avoid charring your meats, eating fried foods. Charcoal or flame-broiled meat is linked with increased breast cancer risk. Acrylamide – a carcinogen created when starchy foods are baked, roasted, or fried—has been found to increase cancer risk as well.
